About us
In my sixtieth year, I decided to start a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science (Physical Activity for Health) at the University of Chichester. Studies included gaining certification in working with people with long term health conditions.
I graduated in 2023 with a first class honours degree, having also qualified as a Personal Trainer, Gym Coach, and Health Navigator. During my time at university, I discovered electromyostimulation and the EMS equipment. The idea to create The Balance Zone was formed.

For most of my adult life, I was the person who joined a gym in January and cancelled my membership in April. In my late fifties I realised that I was suddenly getting weaker. Blow-drying my hair made my arms ache; a full kettle was too heavy to lift; and my back hurt every time I did some gardening.
I decided that something had to change and I started working with a personal trainer. Knowing that I had a one-to-one session every week gave me the motivation to work on my fitness in between training sessions because I knew that Emily would be asking me how the week had been!
The stronger and more flexible I became, the more I enjoyed the sessions. I started working with a Pilates teacher on a Pilates Reformer. I did some adult gymnastics training to improve my balance, and I found a handstand coach to help me work on my ambition to achieve a free-standing handstand. (I’m still working on that.)
I became fascinated with the way the human body works. When Emily went on maternity leave, I struggled to find a personal trainer who understood that training methods that are suitable for twenty-year-olds are not always appropriate for older bodies.
I did find Tim at Extrafit (www.extrafit.co.uk) and had weekly gym sessions during which I not only got stronger but also learnt even more about how exercises can be adapted for different physical conditions. I enjoy applying all the knowledge that I have gained so far, and intend to carry on learning about the human body.
